Eine Schlüsselfunktion im Kampf gegen FGM haben die FGM_C ExpertInnen, die bei TERRE DES FEMMES tätig sind. Sie kommen unter anderem aus Indonesien, Gambia, dem Senegal, Äthiopien, Sudan und Kenia und gehen in direkten Austausch mit ihren Communitys in Berlin, regen intensiv zu Diskussionen an und informieren über die teils tödlichen Folgen von FGM. Ihre Arbeit durch die sogenannten BCAs (Behaviour Change Activities) wirkt präventiv und kann junge Mädchen und Frauen vor den Praktiken schützen.

Der Gedanke hinter einer Sensibilisierung der Communitys durch die FGM_C ExpertInnen ist, dass diese bereits aktive Mitglieder ihrer Community sind und dementsprechend sowohl der Zugang zu als auch das Vertrauen seitens ihrer Community schon besteht. Vor diesem Hintergrund können die FGM_C ExpertInnen effektiv in ihrer Community arbeiten und potenzielle kulturelle und linguistische Barrieren überwinden.

Die FGM_C ExpertInnen begleiten aber auch in akuten Fällen, wirken als KulturvermittlerInnen und sensibilisieren Fachkräfte aus unter anderem dem sozialen, pädagogischen und medizinischen Bereich.

The FGM_C experts who work for TERRE DES FEMMES play a key role in the fight against FGM. They come from Indonesia, Gambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Sudan as well as Kenya and engage in direct exchange with their communities in Berlin, encourage intensive discussions and provide information about the sometimes fatal consequences of FGM. Their work through the so-called BCAs (Behaviour Change Activities) has a preventive effect and can protect young girls and women from the practice.

The idea behind sensitizing the communities through the FGM_C experts is that they are already active members of their community and that both the access to and the trust on the behalf of their community already exist. Within this context, the FGM_C experts can work effectively in their community and overcome potential cultural and linguistic barriers.

The FGM_C experts also provide support in acute cases, act as cultural mediators and sensitize specialists from the social, educational, and medical sectors, among others.
